Why #1 Tint Percentage Matters – What is best?

February 27, 2026 by Fix-A-Crack Leave a Comment

Quick facts – Tint Percentage:

Tint Percentage Chart

Understanding Tint Percentages — What VLT Actually Means

When you hear someone talk about “35% tint” or “20% tint,” they’re referring to VLT — Visible Light Transmission. It’s the percentage of visible light that passes through the glass and film combined.

The lower the number, when looking at tint percentage, the darker the tint:

  • 70% VLT — Nearly clear. Common for windshields. Still blocks UV and infrared with the right film.
  • 50% VLT — Light tint. Subtle from the outside, noticeably cooler inside.
  • 35% VLT — The most popular choice. Good balance of privacy, heat rejection, and visibility.
  • 20% VLT — Dark. High privacy, strong heat performance, but reduced nighttime visibility.
  • 5% VLT — Limo tint. Maximum privacy. Not legal on most windows in Texas.

One thing that trips people up: VLT percentage and heat rejection are not the same thing. A ceramic film at 50% VLT can reject more heat than a cheap dyed film at 20%. The darkness tells you how much visible light comes through. The film technology tells you how much heat stays out. Buying the darkest film you can find without paying attention to film type is one of the most common and expensive mistakes in window tinting when choosing tint percentage alone.

Why Ceramic Film Is Different it is not just Tint Percentage

Not all tint is built the same, and this is where most people make a costly mistake.

Budget dyed films darken your windows by absorbing visible light. They look like tint. They don’t perform like tint. On a 100-degree South Texas afternoon — which is most afternoons from May through October — a car with cheap dyed film still bakes. The windows are darker, but the infrared radiation passes right through and heats everything inside just the same.

Ceramic film works at a completely different level. It uses nano-sized particles embedded across multiple film layers to intercept infrared radiation before it ever enters your cabin. The technology doesn’t rely on darkness to work. A lighter ceramic film at a legal VLT percentage will outperform a dark dyed film almost every time when it comes to actual heat rejection.

The best ceramic films block up to 98% of infrared heat and up to 99% of UV radiation. That UV protection is significant enough that leading ceramic films have earned recognition from the Skin Cancer Foundation — because frequent drivers face real UV exposure through side windows that standard glass does nothing to stop.

Beyond performance, ceramic film simply lasts longer. Dyed films break down under intense sun exposure. In the Rio Grande Valley, that means fading, purpling, and bubbling within a year or two. Ceramic film holds up because it isn’t relying on dye chemistry — it’s engineered at the material level.

Texas Tint Percentage Laws — What You Need to Know in 2026

Texas has specific rules about how dark your tint can be, and they vary by window position. Here’s how it breaks down:

Front Windshield — Tint is only permitted along the top 5 inches. The rest of the windshield must remain untreated.

Front Side Windows — Must allow at least 25% of light through (25% VLT minimum). This applies to the driver and front passenger windows.

Back Side Windows — No restrictions. You can go as dark as you want on rear passenger windows.

Rear Windshield — No restrictions. Any darkness is permitted.

One important note: if your car came from the factory with tinted glass, adding film will darken it further than the film’s rated VLT alone. The combined result is what matters legally, not just the film’s rating. A professional installer will account for this before recommending a shade.

This information is for general reference only and does not substitute for legal advice. Always verify current regulations before installation.

Tint Percentage helps with Full Coverage. It Makes the Biggest Difference

One window tinted while the others stay clear leaves heat pathways wide open. For the best results, every window should be treated — and consistent coverage across all glass means a more stable cabin temperature from the moment you get in.

Think of it like insulation in a house. One insulated wall doesn’t do much. It’s the complete coverage that creates the controlled environment.

Get It Done Right at Fix-A-Crack in McAllen

At Fix-A-Crack, we install professional ceramic window tint built specifically for the heat and UV intensity of the Rio Grande Valley. We’ll walk you through your VLT options, make sure your vehicle stays within Texas legal limits, and install with the precision and care that keeps your tint looking clean for years — no bubbles, no lifting edges, no purple film after one summer.

Whether you’re trying to protect your interior, reduce your AC load, or just make your car bearable to get into in July, the right window tint makes a measurable difference. The wrong tint makes your windows darker and not much else.

Windshield Eyebrow Tint

Is Eyebrow Tint Legal in Texas?

Windshield Eyebrow Tint

The Legal Answer

Is Eyebrow Window Tint Legal in Texas? What McAllen Drivers Need to Know

Yes — it is legal in Texas when installed correctly. Texas DPS windshield tint standards are precise about placement, reflectance, and color restrictions. One mistake means failed inspections, tickets, and expensive removal. Understanding Texas eyebrow tint rules before your appointment protects your investment and keeps your vehicle fully street legal.

What Is Eyebrow?

It is a narrow film strip applied across the very top of your windshield that blocks UV rays, reduces glare, and lowers cabin temperature before it builds. Unlike full windshield film, eyebrow tint targets the highest sun angle — the zone responsible for the blinding morning and afternoon glare McAllen drivers deal with year round. It delivers real heat rejection in a fast, affordable installation that works within Texas windshield tinting rules without compromise.

The AS-1 Line Rule in Texas

Texas tint regulations require all eyebrows to stay above the AS-1 line. This manufacturer marking is etched directly into your windshield glass identifying the legal visibility boundary. It is typically located within the top few inches of the glass and visible on most modern vehicles.

If no AS-1 line exists, Texas DPS standards require eyebrow tint film to end within the top five inches measured from the top of the glass. That boundary is absolute. Film applied below it — even slightly — creates an automatic DPS inspection failure and exposes both driver and installer to liability.

Reflective Tint Is Prohibited

Texas windshield tint laws ban all reflective film on windshields without exception. Your eyebrow tint strip must be non-reflective. Reflective eyebrow window tint redirects sunlight toward oncoming drivers creating serious road hazards — exactly why Texas DPS treats it as an automatic violation. At Fix-A-Crack in McAllen we stock only non-reflective compliant films approved for windshield use so every eyebrow tint installation leaves our shop ready to pass inspection.

Color Restrictions for Brows

Red, amber, and blue tinted films are prohibited on all windshield areas including the eyebrow strip. These restrictions exist because certain color ranges distort traffic signal recognition and reduce contrast visibility in low light. Standard ceramic eyebrow tint films and neutral charcoal tones are fully compliant. Always confirm film color and luminous reflectance meet current Texas DPS tinting standards before installation begins.

Medical Exemptions

Texas medical exemptions allow qualifying drivers to use darker tint on front side windows with a licensed physician’s documentation. Exemptions do not override windshield placement rules. Even with a valid exemption your eyebrow window tint must stay above the AS-1 line. No exemption authorizes film below that boundary. Exemption certificates must remain inside the vehicle during all travel to be valid during traffic stops or inspections.

Why McAllen Drivers Choose Eyebrows

Rio Grande Valley summers push cabin temperatures to dangerous levels within minutes. Direct sun through the upper windshield creates blinding glare during peak commute hours that sunvisors alone cannot fix. Legal eyebrow tint in Texas solves both problems efficiently and permanently. At Fix-A-Crack eyebrow tint installation takes 15 to 30 minutes by appointment — one of the fastest high-value upgrades available for any vehicle.

Common Eyebrow Mistakes

  • Eyebrow film installed below the AS-1 line assuming it passes inspection
  • Reflective or colored eyebrow tint chosen for appearance over compliance
  • Assuming medical exemptions allow windshield tint below the AS-1 line

Protect Yourself: 5 Questions to Ask Every Glass Shop You Call

October 1, 2017 by Fix-A-Crack Leave a Comment

How to Choose an Auto Glass Shop You Can Actually Trust

Be sure to protect yourself. Your windshield isn’t just a piece of glass — it’s a critical safety component of your vehicle. It supports your roof in a rollover, helps your airbags deploy correctly, and keeps you and your passengers protected in a collision. Yet most drivers hand their car over to the first shop that offers a good price or quick appointment, without ever asking the questions that could mean the difference between a safe repair and a dangerous one.

Before you schedule your next windshield replacement or chip repair, arm yourself with these 5 essential questions to ask every auto glass shop you call. The answers will tell you everything you need to know.

Question 1: What Is My Minimum Airbag-Safe Drive-Away Time?

This is probably the most important question you can ask — and most people have never heard of it.

Drive-away time refers to the minimum amount of time the windshield urethane (the adhesive that bonds your new windshield to your vehicle’s frame) must cure before it is safe to drive. This isn’t just about the glass shifting around. If your airbags deploy before the urethane is fully cured, your windshield could blow out instead of staying in place— eliminating the structural support your airbags need to protect you. You are your own best advocate when it comes to making sure you protect yourself.

Urethane products on the market typically come in 6-hour, 4-hour, 2-hour, and 1-hour formulations. A shop that uses a slow-curing glue but sends you on your way in 45 minutes isn’t just cutting corners — they’re putting your life at risk – ensure technicians have been trained. Do this to protect yourself.

Fix-A-Crack uses 1-hour minimum drive-away urethane, and for customers who are truly in a hurry, we also have 30-minute express urethane available. Either way, we will never release your vehicle before it’s safe.

Question 2: Do You Accept My Insurance — and Will You Help Me File My Claim?

Dealing with insurance is stressful enough without adding a confusing claims process on top of a cracked windshield. A reputable auto glass shop should be well-versed in working with major carriers and should be willing to walk through the process with you — not just hand you a phone number and wish you luck. We help you protect yourself.

Fix-A-Crack proudly works with USAA, Farmers, Geico, Allstate, Nationwide, Ameriprise, Progressive, State Farm, and close to 70 other insurance companies across the U.S.A. In many cases, your comprehensive coverage means your windshield repair or replacement costs you nothing out of pocket.

Our expert team will get on the line with your insurance company alongside you, help you understand your coverage, and make sure your claim is handled quickly and correctly. Protect yourself because you should never have to navigate that alone.

Question 3: Are You a Member — or Have You Been a Member — of the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC)?

The Auto Glass Safety Council is the industry’s leading organization dedicated to safe auto glass replacement practices. Membership isn’t automatic — shops must submit to a rigorous examination of their procedures, standards, and technician training, as well as unannounced audits to ensure compliance at every level.

Asking this question immediately separates shops that take safety seriously from those that simply say they do.

Fix-A-Crack was a fully approved and registered AGSC member shop through October 2020, and proudly held the only AGSC Master Certification in the entire Rio Grande Valley. That designation reflects a standard of excellence that most local shops have never even pursued. We went through this process so that you can ensure that you protect yourself with quality work.

Question 4: Are ALL Your Technicians Trained AND Manufacturer-Certified in Windshield Urethane?

Notice the word all in that question — it matters. A shop might have one highly trained technician and a crew of untrained helpers doing the actual work on your vehicle. You deserve to know exactly who is touching your car and what qualifications they hold.

Urethane certification means a technician has been trained directly by the adhesive manufacturer on proper mixing, application, curing conditions, and safety protocols. This training isn’t just a checkbox — it directly affects whether your windshield is installed correctly and whether it will hold in an accident.

Fix-A-Crack’s owners and technicians are trained and certified in three leading urethane systems: Sika, DOW, and Dinitrol. Ask to see our certification badges when you visit — we’re proud to show them.

Question 5: Are Your Technicians Trained and Certified in Chip Repair AND Full Replacements?

Windshield chip repair is a skill in its own right. Done correctly, a small chip can be stabilized and made nearly invisible, preserving your original factory seal and saving you the cost of a full replacement. Done incorrectly, it can crack further or leave a structural weak point.

The same applies to full replacements — precision cutting, cleaning, priming, and bonding all require proper technique and up-to-date training is required to protect yourself.

Fix-A-Crack has invested over 186 hours in windshield continuing education in 2017 alone, and our certifications come from some of the most respected names in the industry:

  • Auto Glass University
  • Auto Glass Academy
  • Equalizer Certified Auto Glass Technicians
  • National Windshield Repair Association (NWRA) Certified Repair Technicians
  • Delta Kits Windshield Repair Certified Technician

When you trust Fix-A-Crack with your vehicle, you’re trusting a team that has earned every one of those credentials.

The Bottom Line with Fix-A-Crack is Protect Yourself as a Customer

Any shop can offer a low price. Not every shop can answer all five of these questions with confidence. The right auto glass shop will welcome your questions — because they know their answers demonstrate exactly why they’ve earned your trust.

Contact Fix-A-Crack today to schedule your repair or replacement. We’re here to protect you, your passengers, and your vehicle — every time.

5 – Protect yourself – Do you have trained technicians and certified in chip repair and replacements?

Don’t you want a team who is fully trained and certified touching your windshield? Fix-A-Crack has invested over 186 hours in windshield continuing education in 2017 alone. Trained technicians ensure you protect yourself.
