Laminated vs tempered glass is why a windshield stars and a side window explodes into cubes. The front pane is two sheets with vinyl in the middle so it holds together in a crash and supports the airbag. Door glass is usually tempered. It is meant to granule. We do not treat them as the same part.
What that means for repair
Resin fills work on laminated outer-pane chips. You cannot fill tempered glass that already shattered. A cracked door window is a replace. A starred windshield might still fill if it meets size and location rules.
Some newer cars use laminated side glass for quiet and security. We identify the part before we quote. Guessing is how people buy the wrong pane.
Safety
NHTSA treats glazing as safety equipment. Our short version: windshields stay laminated. We set them in urethane. Tempered door glass gets the clips and regulators that door was built with.
Why the windshield holds and the door does not
In a crash the windshield is part of the airbag’s backstop on many cars. Tempered door glass is designed to break away. That is why we treat a starred windshield as a maybe-fill and a cracked door as a replace. Mixing those instincts is how people waste a kit on a side window that is already done.
RV and back-glass parts vary. Some hatches are tempered with defroster lines. Some are laminated. We look at the stamp. Bring the car if you are not sure. A photo of the break plus the DOT mark in the corner is the next best thing.
Never run a tempered window that is spidered. Tape it, tow it, or drive slow with the gap covered. A full dump of cubes on 10th Street is how people get stranded.
Dropping the car at Suite P

You can wait in the lobby on many shorter jobs. Replaces and regulator work take longer. Bring a charger. Pets stay with you. If a lender or dealer holds a second key, say so we can lock the car in the lot. Fleet drivers should bring the PO or unit number. We quote from what we see on this vehicle, not from a ZIP-code widget.
After the job, keep the receipt. Ask about drive-away time, the first car wash, and whether a camera light might need a return visit. Workmanship, leaks, and defects terms are on the after-your-glass-work page. That is not a free 12-month road-hazard replacement plan. A new rock hit is a new inspection.
