#1 Question: Is My Windshield Crack too Big to Be Repaired?

January 20, 2023 by Fix-A-Crack Leave a Comment

If you’ve recently acquired windshield damage, you may be wondering if your windshield crack is too big to be repaired. When it comes to windshield repair, there are two standards for repairing windshield cracks, the insurance company’s standards and the Fix-A-Crack standard. Here is an overview of the two with the biggest question being: Is my windshield crack too big to be repaired. The answer is sometimes, YES. But often NO.

Insurance Company Windshield Repair Standard often says YES to is a windshield crack too big to be repaired?

Most insurance companies state that if your windshield damage is greater than 6” (or the size of a dollar bill), it is not repairable, they will not pay for the repair and they will recommend that your windshield be replaced. We follow this standard. However, it is just that a standard and not a law: Fix-A-Crack specializes in long crack repair. Generally up to 13 inches; however, we can sometimes pull of the impossible depending where the crack is on your windshield. This does not replace advice that your windshield should be replaced, but it leaves you with an option that might just buy you some time.

Fix-A-Crack Windshield Repair Standard

Fix-A-Crack is a long-crack specialty repair shop. We are known throughout the Rio Grande Valley as the leader in long-crack repair and shops refer their “unrepairable” long-cracks to us. In fact, our owner and lead technician has been invited by industry vendors to teach our techniques to other glass shop owners.

We fix (and warranty) long crack repairs up to 14” long unless the size and location of the crack:

windshield crack too big to be repaired

1 – Compromises the structural integrity of your windshield,

2 – Causes a distraction hazard or

3 – Negatively affects safety features such as a Heads Up Display or your forward facing camera.

The Fix-A-Crack Complete Long Crack Repair Process

Our goal is to help you save your windshield. Therefore, we perform what is called a “Complete Long Crack Repair” which involves three steps.

Step 1 – Filling the Impact Point

This is a step most glass shops skip. However, if the impact point is not filled, you may have lines radiate from the impact in other directions. Filling the impact point also stabilizes the remainder of the repair.

Step 2 – Creating a Termination Point

We create a stopping point at the end the line to keep the crack from spreading further. We have a variety of methods for doing this.

Step 3 – Filling the Line

This is not a cosmetic fix. We add specialized windshield resin to the line to give your long windshield crack more stability so that the repair stays intact and does not spread further.

FAQs

1 – How can you evaluate if my windshield crack is repairable?

The best way for us to evaluate your windshield damage is to stop by our shop (304 E. Pecan, Suite P, McAllen, TX 78501) and let us look at it in person. You may also text us a picture of the damage to 956-360-0178.

2 – Will the crack disappear after the repair?

No. Just like your skin has a scar after it heals, your long crack repair will have a “scar” and still be visible, but the visibility will be reduced by about 50%

3 – Is it better to repair my long windshield crack or replace it?

If it is repairable, the answer comes down to your personal preference. We will help you consider variables such as:

  • Tolerance of visibility
  • Price of repair vs. price of replacement

4 – Do you provide a warranty on long crack repairs? Our customers tell us that Fix-A-Crack offers the best long-crack repair warranty in McAllen, Texas. Contact us for the details.

How to get Insurance to cover Windshield Chip Repair

January 18, 2023 by Fix-A-Crack Leave a Comment

2 Steps to Insurance Pays Windshield Chip Repairs in McAllen TX is easier than most drivers think — and at Fix-A-Crack Windshield Repair and Replacement, we walk you through the entire process at no cost to you. If you have comprehensive auto insurance coverage, your windshield chip repair may be 100% covered with zero out-of-pocket expense. Thousands of McAllen drivers every year leave money on the table simply because they don’t know how straightforward the insurance claim process really is.

Don’t let a small chip turn into a full crack. The Rio Grande Valley’s intense summer heat and highway road debris make windshield damage one of the most common vehicle issues in South Texas. The good news is that most insurance policies already cover this — and at Fix-A-Crack, we do all the heavy lifting so you don’t have to worry about that windshield chip.

Read below to see exactly how to get insurance to cover windshield chip repair in McAllen and the surrounding Rio Grande Valley.

Step 1: Verify Your Comprehensive Coverage Includes Chips and we will help with how Insurance Pays Windshield Chip Repairs.

Before anything else, confirm that your auto insurance policy includes comprehensive coverage — this is the coverage that pays for windshield chip repair and replacement claims in McAllen TX. Liability-only policies do not cover glass damage. This is the most important distinction drivers need to understand before filing a chip repair windshield insurance claim in McAllen TX.

Most major insurance carriers active in the McAllen, TX area — including State Farm, GEICO, Progressive, Allstate, Farmers, and USAA — cover windshield chip repair under comprehensive coverage, often with no deductible required for repairs (as opposed to full replacements). Texas law is favorable to consumers when it comes to glass claims, and many policyholders don’t realize their repair could cost them absolutely nothing.

Here’s what to check on your policy:

  • Is comprehensive coverage listed? (Not just liability or collision)
  • Does your policy include full glass coverage or a zero-deductible glass rider?
  • What is your deductible for glass claims? (Chip repairs are often waived entirely)
  • Have you filed a glass claim before? (Prior claims do not typically affect your premium)

Not sure about your coverage? Don’t stress. Call your insurance provider or simply hand us your insurance card when you arrive — we’ll verify your coverage for you at no charge before any work begins. Our team at Fix-A-Crack deals with insurance carriers every single day and knows exactly what to look for.

Step 2: Call Fix-A-Crack – Insurance Pays Windshield Chip Repairs – We will help you File Your Windshield Chip Repair Insurance Claim.

Windshield Insurance Claim FAQs – McAllen, TX

1. Do all insurance companies pay for windshield chip repairs? Most A and A+ rated insurance companies will cover windshield repairs if you have comprehensive coverage. However, some companies like AAA and State Farm may have restrictions.

2. How many windshield chips will my insurance pay for? Most insurance companies only cover one chip per claim. Additional chips are usually out-of-pocket. At Fix-A-Crack, when your insurance pays for the first repair, we offer discounted pricing on any extra chips.

3. Is it hard to file a windshield insurance claim? No. Because of our special agreement with insurance companies, Fix-A-Crack can skip the inspection and verification process. We file the claim for you on the spot using our approved system.

4. Will my insurance rates go up if I file a windshield repair claim? It’s possible, but not guaranteed. Insurance companies consider several factors at renewal time, including the number and type of claims you’ve filed. Many drivers find that a small windshield claim has little to no effect on their premiums.

5. How long does a windshield repair take? Most repairs are completed in about 15 minutes.

6. Can insurance cover a crack in my door glass? Technically, laminated door glass can sometimes be repaired, but insurance companies generally do not pay for door glass repairs. We usually recommend replacement because door glass moves up and down.

7. Can insurance cover a crack in my sunroof? If your sunroof is made of laminated glass, it may be repairable. However, insurance companies typically do not cover sunroof repairs. Bring it by and we’ll evaluate it for you.

If your sunroof is made of laminated glass, it may be repairable. Call us at 956-360-0178 or visit our shop (304 E. Pecan, Suite P, McAllen, TX 78501) and let us evaluate it in person. Unfortunately, insurance companies do not pay for sunroof repairs.

Protect Yourself: 5 Questions to Ask Every Glass Shop You Call

October 1, 2017 by Fix-A-Crack Leave a Comment

How to Choose an Auto Glass Shop You Can Actually Trust

Be sure to protect yourself. Your windshield isn’t just a piece of glass — it’s a critical safety component of your vehicle. It supports your roof in a rollover, helps your airbags deploy correctly, and keeps you and your passengers protected in a collision. Yet most drivers hand their car over to the first shop that offers a good price or quick appointment, without ever asking the questions that could mean the difference between a safe repair and a dangerous one.

Before you schedule your next windshield replacement or chip repair, arm yourself with these 5 essential questions to ask every auto glass shop you call. The answers will tell you everything you need to know.

Question 1: What Is My Minimum Airbag-Safe Drive-Away Time?

This is probably the most important question you can ask — and most people have never heard of it.

Drive-away time refers to the minimum amount of time the windshield urethane (the adhesive that bonds your new windshield to your vehicle’s frame) must cure before it is safe to drive. This isn’t just about the glass shifting around. If your airbags deploy before the urethane is fully cured, your windshield could blow out instead of staying in place— eliminating the structural support your airbags need to protect you. You are your own best advocate when it comes to making sure you protect yourself.

5 questions - protect yourself
Protect Yourself: 5 Questions to Ask Every Glass Shop You Call 6

Urethane products on the market typically come in 6-hour, 4-hour, 2-hour, and 1-hour formulations. A shop that uses a slow-curing glue but sends you on your way in 45 minutes isn’t just cutting corners — they’re putting your life at risk – ensure technicians have been trained. Do this to protect yourself.

Fix-A-Crack uses 1-hour minimum drive-away urethane, and for customers who are truly in a hurry, we also have 30-minute express urethane available. Either way, we will never release your vehicle before it’s safe.

Question 2: Do You Accept My Insurance — and Will You Help Me File My Claim?

Dealing with insurance is stressful enough without adding a confusing claims process on top of a cracked windshield. A reputable auto glass shop should be well-versed in working with major carriers and should be willing to walk through the process with you — not just hand you a phone number and wish you luck. We help you protect yourself.

Fix-A-Crack proudly works with USAA, Farmers, Geico, Allstate, Nationwide, Ameriprise, Progressive, State Farm, and close to 70 other insurance companies across the U.S.A. In many cases, your comprehensive coverage means your windshield repair or replacement costs you nothing out of pocket.

Our expert team will get on the line with your insurance company alongside you, help you understand your coverage, and make sure your claim is handled quickly and correctly. Protect yourself because you should never have to navigate that alone.

Question 3: Are You a Member — or Have You Been a Member — of the Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC)?

The Auto Glass Safety Council is the industry’s leading organization dedicated to safe auto glass replacement practices. Membership isn’t automatic — shops must submit to a rigorous examination of their procedures, standards, and technician training, as well as unannounced audits to ensure compliance at every level.

Asking this question immediately separates shops that take safety seriously from those that simply say they do.

Fix-A-Crack was a fully approved and registered AGSC member shop through October 2020, and proudly held the only AGSC Master Certification in the entire Rio Grande Valley. That designation reflects a standard of excellence that most local shops have never even pursued. We went through this process so that you can ensure that you protect yourself with quality work.

Question 4: Are ALL Your Technicians Trained AND Manufacturer-Certified in Windshield Urethane?

Notice the word all in that question — it matters. A shop might have one highly trained technician and a crew of untrained helpers doing the actual work on your vehicle. You deserve to know exactly who is touching your car and what qualifications they hold.

Urethane certification means a technician has been trained directly by the adhesive manufacturer on proper mixing, application, curing conditions, and safety protocols. This training isn’t just a checkbox — it directly affects whether your windshield is installed correctly and whether it will hold in an accident.

Fix-A-Crack’s owners and technicians are trained and certified in three leading urethane systems: Sika, DOW, and Dinitrol. Ask to see our certification badges when you visit — we’re proud to show them.

Question 5: Are Your Technicians Trained and Certified in Chip Repair AND Full Replacements?

Windshield chip repair is a skill in its own right. Done correctly, a small chip can be stabilized and made nearly invisible, preserving your original factory seal and saving you the cost of a full replacement. Done incorrectly, it can crack further or leave a structural weak point.

The same applies to full replacements — precision cutting, cleaning, priming, and bonding all require proper technique and up-to-date training is required to protect yourself.

Fix-A-Crack has invested over 186 hours in windshield continuing education in 2017 alone, and our certifications come from some of the most respected names in the industry:

  • Auto Glass University
  • Auto Glass Academy
  • Equalizer Certified Auto Glass Technicians
  • National Windshield Repair Association (NWRA) Certified Repair Technicians
  • Delta Kits Windshield Repair Certified Technician

When you trust Fix-A-Crack with your vehicle, you’re trusting a team that has earned every one of those credentials.

The Bottom Line with Fix-A-Crack is Protect Yourself as a Customer

Any shop can offer a low price. Not every shop can answer all five of these questions with confidence. The right auto glass shop will welcome your questions — because they know their answers demonstrate exactly why they’ve earned your trust.

Contact Fix-A-Crack today to schedule your repair or replacement. We’re here to protect you, your passengers, and your vehicle — every time.

5 – Protect yourself – Do you have trained technicians and certified in chip repair and replacements?

Don’t you want a team who is fully trained and certified touching your windshield? Fix-A-Crack has invested over 186 hours in windshield continuing education in 2017 alone. Trained technicians ensure you protect yourself.
