The new McAllen Convention Center is adjacent to the Veteran’s War Memorial of Texas, a memorial dedicated to the honor of Texas servicemen and women who gave their lives defending the freedoms Americans enjoy today. The black granite walls of the 5-acre site are inscribed with the names of the fallen warriors. The park is filled with army statues. Veteran and MIA ceremonies are held frequently at the memorial.
On Veteran’s Day in November 2013, the Veteran’s War Memorial of Texas was dedicated to the memory of the 1.4 million American servicemen and women who have been killed or are still missing in action across all U.S. wars and conflicts. On a 5-acre compound at the corner of 29th and Galveston Streets in McAllen, Texas stands a memorial honoring the victims of five different wars: World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and All Wars.
The site features a statue called “The Warrior” in honor of the 3,440 Medal of Honor recipients in the United States Armed Forces, as well as 160 granite panels with stories offering historical information about each war, its citizenships, and events of that time.
Located at the Veterans War Memorial of Texas in McAllen, Texas, “The American Spire of Honor” is a 105-foot-tall black granite spire with five sides. Approximately 1.3 million American servicemen and women have been died in all wars and conflicts of this Nation, and the “American Spire of Honor” will stand forever as a symbol of the honor, respect, and appreciation of the American people for their sacrifice.
Rising over the American Memorial to its fallen heroes is a magnificent Spire that will help future generations remember that the freedom they enjoy is a gift rather than a right. This liberty comes at a terrible human cost, but it is worth it. If we want our descendants to experience what it’s like to live in a free country, we need to make sure that freedom and liberty are protected. If we fail to preserve this precious gift of freedom, America will perish.
For all eternity, the “American Spire of honor” will stand as a reminder of the majesty of America and the unyielding commitment of its people to the ideals of freedom and liberty for all. Anyone (veterans or not) can join the ranks of the “American Spire of Honor” Guardians.
By being here today, you are helping to ensure that future generations will never forget the struggles and sacrifices made by American servicemen and women as our country developed into a free nation. Inscribing your name on the Guardian walls beneath the “American Spire of Honor” is a public declaration of your commitment to the ideals of freedom and independence that have made the United States a symbol of strength and inspiration around the globe.
