In the mid-1960s, Francis B. Alexander, a single-engine aircraft pilot, crashed into the Virgen de San Juan del Valle Shrine. Twenty minutes later, he was radioing evacuation warnings for the lower Rio Grande Valley. The Shrine and its attendant community received national attention, as did the nearby schools.
