South Texas College, sometimes known as STC, located in McAllen, is a community college that is open to the public and is located in the Rio Grande Valley area of South Texas. It is authorized to confer the degrees of Bachelor of Applied Technology, Associate of Applied Science, Associate of Arts, and Associate of Science by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. Approximately 31,000 students are enrolled at STC, and the institution’s workforce of 1,600 people is spread out across its six sites. It was established in September 1993 with the adoption of Texas Senate Bill 251, the intention of which was to provide services to both Hidalgo and Starr County.
The faculty at South Texas College is comprised of 428 full-time and 228 adjunct members. 384 of the faculty members have earned a master’s degree, 46 have earned two master’s degrees, 5 have earned three master’s degrees, and 79 have earned doctoral degrees. There are 97 instructors with bachelor’s degrees working in the certificate and other programs, while 44 instructors work in the associate degree programs. Students who choose to continue their education beyond an associate degree have access to more than sixty articulation agreements that have been established between STC and universities located all around the United States.
The North American Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education Initiative is headquartered at the institution, which also serves as the organization’s fiscal agent and administrative center. All of the community colleges and technical schools in the area are connected to the Southern Technical College, which functions as the Regional Institute for Advanced Manufacturing. The institution has taken the initiative to assist in the training of people to fuel an economy based on manufacturing in the region and to encourage innovations in manufacturing that facilitate rapid response.
